Paper: the good, the bad and the ugly

Everyone brings in samples of their favourite papers and tells us:

  • why they love them
  • how they use them
  • what they use them for
  • who are their favourite sources for paper

If someone has horror stories about any paper, we want to hear that too.

Presentation: Graven Images: the joys and challenges of working with 19th C wood engravings (Larry Thompson)

Graven Images is a portfolio of 19th century wood engravings Larry printed from the original blocks. Tonight Larry’s going to regale us with tales of horror about paper, type, printing and the word that strikes fear into the heart of every printer: make-ready.

December 08

Holiday sale & swap

Sale: Those with goods to sell (either finished items or materials) are encouraged to bring them, with 10% of the proceeds of sales going to the guild coffers.

Swap: Bring a journal, take home a journal. We’re going to use a fun gift exchange process to redistribute the wrapped swap creations. Then we’ll open them up and talk about the different approaches.

Nancy Leavitt: In Search of Content, The joys and challenges of creating in the book form

Like an engineering project, a book is complex three-dimensional design made up of many parts. Content is the central idea of the design and narrative is how the story is revealed. Our goal as bookmakers is to intentionally integrate all aspects of the design to strengthen the structure, form, and content of our works. In this illustrated talk, Nancy discusses her rigorous yet playful method of researching, compiling data, developing, and realizing materials for her manuscript books.
